This product is every bit as good as all the reviewers say. I appreciate the company’s dedication to quality. My female dog is healthy and happy after three months on this food. She also hasn’t gained weight, as many cocker spaniel due. Some have commented on the expense, I just made some calculations, and for a small dog like mine, it’s costing about $8.00 a month, not bad at all. There is one reason I will be switching to a different Blue Buffalo food next time, and that is those little Life Source Bits. The company advertises them as an extra nutritional boost. Well, my dog won’t eat them, she drops them on the kitchen floor, they’re all over the kitchen no matter how often I sweep. Then people step on them and they’re all over the hall, the living room, stuck down in the carpet etc. they’re driving me crazy, so now I’m off to shop for an excellent Blue Buffalo product without the Bits.

My husband and I have a beautiful 60 lb lab mix (we’re reaching her 8-month birthday soon since we adopted her). We tried feeding her different brands of dog food (3 brands), but noticed she started to develop a rash on her belly after the 2nd brand. We couldn’t afford the first brand we had ($80/bag) for long (it was a temporary vet recommended food). We did some heavy research on good dog foods and this was near the top of the list due to the ingredients. Our dog loved it AND her rash went away within the first week to week and a half of switching. How long does it last for us?This is something I always wonder. According to her weight, the bag says to feed her between 2 1/4 -3 1/4 cups a day. According to our vet, we feed her 3 (strict) cups a day (1.5 in the AM /1.5 in the PM) and it lasts us about 3 weeks and 3 days.

This is the only product my very picky and spoiled pittie, Winnie, eats! When I adopted her, I was informed of her high intolerance to grains and grain by-products. I was purchasing it from an upscale neighborhood pet store, until I found out it was much more affordable on Amazon. Both she and I are thrilled about it! Happy dog begging me to fill her bowl in pic below:

At the bottom of the bag was a web like substance with worms crawling around it. I called the vet and he said they were not harmful to the dogs. It was horrifying.

I have consistently bought my dogs Blue Buffalo Wilderness Duck Recipe since they were puppies. I have never had a problem with it. However, when I purchased it from Amazon, my dogs began puking and having diarrhea. I since have bought a new bag from Petsmart and they are doing fine. Maybe I got a bad bag or something. Either way, I will be spending the extra money at a pet store rather than Amazon.

I was a Blue Wilderness supporter for years but the company went down the toilet. They outsource their protein and it’s making our pets sick! My dog became lethargic and developed a breathing problem. I switched him and my cats to Merrick and his breathing is getting better and his awful cough is finally going away. Shame on you Blue Wilderness for providing toxins for our adored pets!

  8. (verified owner)

I’m not sure where this product comes from but my dog has eaten Blue Buffalo for years with no issues. However the last bag I bought on Amazon gave her diarrhea and made her throw up.

  9. (verified owner)

I tried the duck for my dog because she has allergies, we always bought the red meat dry food from blue wilderness. On the second day she was on this new flavor she started getting diarrhea, by the 5th day vomiting. We changed nothing but the flavor. It also smells really bad. We have are trying different food typed because of her allergies and I don’t recommend this one.

  10. (verified owner)

We have been buying BB for a long time, we recently (slowly) switched to the duck. DO NOT DO IT! Both German Shepherds began to get skin lesions and scruffy fur. They refused to eat the food after a few days. I don’t know if we got a bad batch, but I will not buy this again.

I have a 7 year old pit bull and she has horrible skin reactions is she intakes something that does not react properly with her body (she even flared up with veterinary prescription diet). After testing multiple food that works for her, we found a match which was the blue wilderness. I’ve always stopped by the pet retail stores to pick up her food but this time decided to order online (assuming it is the same stuff I get from the store). However since she’s started this bag, she’s been getting horrible diarrhea and even blood in her stool. I took her to the vet and all they could tell me was it was probably because of something she ate (at this point it is only the dog food i gave her). Doubtfully, I decided to stop by the store and pick up the exact same food and see how she reacts. No diarrhea, no blood after the next day. I know for sure I’m throwing out this bag and will never order it again.

We have been feeding Blue Wildernesses to our beloved dogs for many years now and were pleased with it. However, the last bag we opened had a weird white, hard “thing” in the kibbles. Whatever this is, is very hard and won’t break….bone, maybe??? They look like animal nails (not saying they are nails, but look like it).Not sure but whatever it is shouldn’t be in the kibble, it is nothing from the ingredients list. I made a claim with Amazon, and they replaced the bag no questions asked. Unfortunately, the new bag, which is from a different lot also has the darn things in it. I tried contacting Blue directly but they are out on a training and won’t be able to answer till Monday, February 5th…No one can answer for about a week really??? I’m very concerned and disappointed. The picture shows some of the kibble with the white pieces and chips that I pulled out of the kibbles trying to figure out what the heck this is.

  13. (verified owner)

We have bought several bags of this brand and flavor from our local pet store and never had a problem with it. So then we decided to save some money and buy it online from Amazon. We have only received 1 bag so far and ever since we opened it our Chesapeake Retriever has been having diarrhea all over our house for days now and our small dog has had runny stool. After paying for a vet bill and making her rice and hamburger for a week, we tried the food again and now we are back to our big dog having diarrhea. I am so upset that something is going on with this brand to where they are hurting our dogs by making them so sick!!! I will never buy this brand again or EVER recommend anyone buy it online!!!

  14. (verified owner)

I have been feeding my dog for years their food. it seems that the salmon cost me 434$ at the vet per the VCA vet. I still have a bag of the chicken and I will see how that goes. the is the 2nd large vet bill in the last 3 months.

  15. (verified owner)

It’s sad for me to write a review since my dog loves blue wilderness. I normally buy it from petsmart blue wilderness salmon flavored blue bag. My dog ate it since I’ve had him. I ordered from amazon to save money since at the store it’s $60 and amazon is only $48 with delivery. My poor dog had severe diarrhea for two days and is recovering slowly. He ate the red bag salmon flavored and couldn’t control his bowels. It was a nightmare. Thinking maybe he had a bug, I fed him only Purina I that normally mixed in with blue wilderness and he ate a little bit. I tried to give him blue wilderness again and he did not go near his bowl for dinner and laid down. I dumped out his food and put the Purina to see if he would eat it not mixed with Blue wilderness, he ate two servings. I’m shocked that it was that bad of a reaction and the fact that he knew it made him sick. I will NOT be ordering from amazon ever again and pay extra at Petsmart.

I’ve been feeding this to my Lola since I adopted her over two years ago. I started her on the Chicken Recipe but then switched to Salmon when her skin started to flake. I went against my vets recommendation then to switch off Blue all together. I read hundreds of reviews. I thought she was being paid to tell me to switch. Well, even though she has ZERO issues other than weight gain, they’re being sued for many of their products containing lead. I read the saddest stories from people who lost their beloved pets. I take my pets health and wellness very seriously. I cannot believe they’re facing a current class action lawsuit. Even though the salmon recipe was not on the list for containing lead I will not chance her getting sick or worse dying because of food I trusted to give her. Instead I am switching to Fromm and Grandmas. Blue, you better try to make this right. You lost this customer for life.

My dog eats only Blue Wilderness grain free chicken dry dog food. I thought I’d enjoy the convenience of having my dogs food delivered directly to my home. After eating from this bag of food, she got sick and was throwing up. I thought she ate something I didn’t know about, but she refused to go near the food from this bag. After two days of not eating anything other than the milk bones I gave her, I bought a bag of this food at my local pet store and my dog ate as soon as I put the bowl down, there is something wrong with the bag of food I bought from this vendor. Save yourself, and your dogs stomach, and buy your dog food from a local pet store.

  19. (verified owner)

This made my dog very sick. Please be careful and buy this particular brand in the store.

  20. (verified owner)

I’ve been buying Blue Wilderness Chicken for my dog ever since I switched him to adult food. He used to love the dog food but the latest bag I bought had noticeably larger kibble bits. I am not sure if they have changed the recipie but my dog would have consistent diarrhea and vomiting. I have since stopped ordering Blue Wilderness. I do not advise buying this product until they return to their original recipie.

  21. (verified owner)

I have been a Blue Buffalo customer since I got my dog a year ago. Last week I opened up a new bag of the food she always eats. 3 days later she was vomiting everywhere extremely lethargic and began refusing to eat her BB food for the next 4 days. I took her to the vet today to find out that it was the food she was avoiding and that there have been other dogs that have gotten sick with this new formula due to high lead levels! Please check the reviews before purchasing!

  22. (verified owner)

70lb Yellow Lab used to love this food. She has recently started to throw up 3-4 hours after consuming. This has been happening for 5-6 months. After reading other reviews I realize I am not the only one. I would recommend you checking out manufacturers prior to having your pet consuming. Not worth the savings from subscribe and save. Cancelled and will not be reordering due to 8 year old pets sickness/GI Issues.

  23. (verified owner)

Been feeding my dogs Blue Buffalo for three years. Everything was good until a month ago when both of my dogs started having stool problems. One of them had really bad diarrhea and would wake me up 3-5 times at night to go outside. I thought it wasn’t food related so I fed them home cooked food and they stopped having diarrhea. I switched them back on Blue Buffalo and the diarrhea is back. We saw a lot of similar recent reviews on consumer affairs about dogs getting very sick after eating BB since General Mills has bought it. I’m not buying BB anymore. For the price of it you’d expect to get a good quality product.

  24. (verified owner)

I ALWAYS buy this brand and I usually just repeat my oder once my dog’s food is close to finishing. Yesterday we we’re nearing the end of his latest food bag and this blob of dog food mold (see photos) fell out of the bottom of the bag!!! My dog has been sick on and off for the past month (since we received his latest food bag) and we could not figure out what was causing the issue until now! I usually love this brand, but after seeing this, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this food bag anymore.

  25. (verified owner)

Dogs started getting sick into this latest bag. It appears that the quality has not improved after settling law suits for lead and misleading the public about ingredients. Time for a change of food.

  26. (verified owner)

I pulled the trigger on this food because I had always thought good things about Blue Buffalo. My Border Collie has been eating this food for almost two weeks now, I have notice a big difference in his poop, it seems like as time goes on his poop gets looser and looser. When I changed over to this food I mixed it with his old food before feeding him 100% Blue Buffalo. So after reading reviews about Blue Buffalo it seems either the Dogs can take it or not, but the dogs that have a difficult time with the food seem to be major, and I’m not going to risk loosing my dog to expensive food that may kill him slowly. I am going back to Elevate-Acadia recipe as that food seemed to be the best for my dog.I am going to inquire about returning the Blue Buffalo food before I loose my dog …22 November 2018 – UpdateI have to give Amazon a attaboy for backing the products they sell. Amazon gets 5 stars.I stopped feeding my dog the Blue Buffalo Wilderness, went back to my original dog food. My dogs poop is back to normal and I think my dog even feels better. There something in the Blue Buffalo that did not agree with my dog. Blue Buffalo May be a good dog food but it did not work well for my dog.

  27. (verified owner)

My dog is allergic to everything and has always been missing fur on her ears, chest, and tail. She’s always had bad nails too, they are brittle, brake off, and cause her pain. She’s about 13 now and after 3 months of being on this food she has a full chest of hair and her nails are strong. I got her when she was about 2 and she’s never had hair on her chest as long as I’ve had her. She looks better now that when she was 2! We both wish we’d found this grain free dog food years ago!I’m not one to sell snake oil or be hyperbolic about anything and I don’t want to come off as a sales-person, but if your dog has skin issues it might be a wheat or grain allergy and this stuff is worth a try.

  28. (verified owner)

When this came, the box was messed up and literally came apart when I opened it. There was a hole in the bag and food was loose in the box. Really??? My chihuahua, Rosie, did not care for this food. I do not plan to order this again. Only, after this order came, I read about law suits and bad food that made dogs very sick. I see it is now 40% off. It was not 40% off when I ordered it, which was days ago. I feel really upset by this, because I paid too much for a dog food that I do not want to give to any of my babies. They are family. I regret ever ordering this! People should be warned! Very disappointed in Amazon!

  29. (verified owner)

I have been purchasing this dog food for over a year now for my chihuahua/papillon mix. I had started him on their puppy formula and then switched over to this, he loves it! It helps maintain him at a healthy weight and his coat is silky soft. My pup is missing a few middle teeth, they never came in, so he does have a hard time with the very small pieces in this dog food. So fair warning if your dog is picky or missing some teeth you may find some pieces of dog food spit out. Other then that this bag will last my dog a whole month before I have to get another bag, that is with giving him wet food in the evenings. I highly recommend!

  30. (verified owner)

We biy BB Salmon once a month for our dog. She has had stomach issues as a puppy ( almost died from a previous food) we started her on BB shortly after that and she has been perfect for the past 4 years. We did try to put her on a more expensive brand and she wanted nothing to do with it. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

  31. (verified owner)

My Chesapeake Bay Retriever ranks this food at the bottom of all edible things in the house. Even when finally eating it, she is still hungry and roaming for food. The marketing is great (cool lifestyle images and foil shining bags), but even the vet has told me to steer clear as this is like the McDonalds of dog food. I have switched to Royal Canin labrador food and my dog likes it and is satisfied/filled by it. This food is edible and will keep a dog alive, but I certainly felt more excited about this purchase than my dog did.

  32. (verified owner)

I have used Blue in the past, this exact one and never had a problem. Upon switching back to this, my bulldog- who will eat anything, refuses to touch this food. And when he does, it makes him violently ill. I thought maybe he had a bug or his stomach had to adjust back to the food but after a couple weeks, it’s still a problem & I stopped feeding him it. There were days where he wouldn’t even go near his bowl and I’d have to give him eggs or something else just so he’d eat. Stay away. After reading the reviews, it’s not worth it. Save your dog…and your money.

  33. (verified owner)

We got our dog when he was 3 months old. We have tried different types of food but everything just kept upsetting his stomach and ended up giving him IBS this is the ONLY food that he can eat that will not cause him to have diarrhea or throw up. I love that is doesn’t have byproducts and it also is high in protein. It’s also the only food that is safe for my sickly cat. While my cats do have their own food and their own dish they love to steal the little protein pieces out of the dog food (which my 95 pound dog allows them to do).

  34. (verified owner)

Ever since General Mills purchased Blue dog food, it has been down hill. The last bag, the kibble size has changed and the odor is almost repulsive, so they change what was a good product for the sake of greed. We contacted them and of course they denied any change, but I have proof in the bag it has changed. We purchased this product from Chewy and to their credit, they sent a free replacement, but it is not any better. After using this for years, I am forced to change for my pet’s safety.

  35. (verified owner)

My poor puppy for over a year was suffering with his ears shakes and scratching of his ears, not so bad that we thought it was a huge problem but we always noticed it and would always try to figure out what it was. The vet said it could be chicken allergies. So this is the first time trying a non-chicken-based food. And that’s what it was ! NO MORE EAR SCRATCHES! My two dogs are up SAST with this food. They cannot wait to eat it. The price is good especially if you get the largest size. It is a bit pinker do you to the fish product

  36. (verified owner)

Warning to dog parents: this causes liver damage!!! We had our lab on this for three years and took her for her annual check up yesterday where the vet said her liver is damaged. They asked what food we feed her and when we said BB, they immediately said we need to switch food and get our baby on medication. I hope the damage is not permanent. Please please do not risk giving your dog this brand. We used to be loyal to BB but not anymore.

  37. (verified owner)

My dog wouldn’t stop puking up her food. So, I went and bought a new bag from the local pet store. Turns out I got a rotten bag. She kept down the food from the new bag. Canceled subscription…

  38. (verified owner)

I’ve never written a product review on Amazon, but I felt like I should warn other buyers.I’ve used this exact brand/flavor/size since last year without any issues. This bag was different. Our dog started getting very sick within a couple of hours we refilled our container with the new bag. She had the worst uncontrollable diarrhea multiple times a day. She is a very well trained Aussie and has not gone potty inside since she was 3 months old (she’s 2 now). However, she was so sick that she had accidents all over our apartments for 2 weeks. At first, we just thought she might have eaten something bad outside, so we started making her plain rice and chicken to help her feel better. She got better after a couple of days, then we started feeding her the kibbles and she got sick again. We were still convinced it wasn’t the kibbles since we have used the same one for months, so we switched back onto rice and chicken, thinking she might have eaten something bad outside again. We kept her inside for 2 days straight and only let her out strictly for potty breaks and made sure she wasn’t eating something she wasn’t supposed to. Fed her the kibbles again and she’s extremely sick again.I am very upset at the inconsistent quality of this food.

I’ve been feeding my dogs blue buffalo for a couple years now. They always loved it and I loved it. I’ve been hearing a lot about lawsuits and issues with them, though, and it makes me nervous. I haven’t had any issues in that regard, but I’m noticing my dogs have had recurring ear infections and recurring anal gland issues and I’m wondering if this food is causing an allergic reaction. We have our lab on an allergy food because she clearly has allergies and I’m thinking about switching my shepherd to something else, too. The food has come in good condition time after time, though, so I’m not really sure how to feel about it.

I have had my Siberian Husky on this food since she was rescued about 6 years ago. I have always purchased my BB Wilderness food locally (PetSmart, PetValu). About 3 months ago, I ordered a bag from Amazon, under a 40% off regular scheduled delivery promotion. I didn’t know that there was a lot of inconsistency with this particular brand, as I have never experienced any sort of sudden onset illnesses with this food, with any prior dogs I have owned. This time around, my dog was sick off and on for the entire time I was feeding her this food, she dealt with periodic bouts of diahrea and just was not her normal self. I never once thought it was the food until I started logging her meals and with her being a Husky, she is a free feeder, and doesn’t consistenly eat 2 meals a day. I logged everything she ate, and she rarely gets people food, and during this time, I never gave her new treats, or tried anything different with her diet. I discovered that days when she ate 2 both her breakfast and dinner the previous day, were days followed by violent diahrea. After a few weeks of seeing a repetive occurrence of this, I attributed the illness to her food. Keep in mind, this dog would never use the house as her bathroom, unless sick. She has had 2 accidents in the house in 6.5 years. So, I reluctantly purchased another bag, and within a day, she was back to her normal self again, without a single incidence of diahrea since the new bag was opened. I did a bunch of research online, and discovered that BB Wilderness had been recalled 11 times for different things, one of which was lead toxicity. I have no idea if lead toxicity was the problem, but she has not had diahrea in over 3 weeks now, and since I switched her over to the new bag of food. She is a totally different dog now–much more energetic, not irritable, and eats her food daily without getting sick now. I am disappointed that this can even happen with this expensive food and I am not sure how suspect kibble gets through any sort of quality control at the food producer. I am disappointed in BB and will be considerign a switch from this food soon.

Seemed to agree well with our Border collie/Spaniel cross. The dog gets tons of exercise: a lot of 8-10 mile walks and many uphill and beach adventures. He loves, loves, loves to play with other dogs, even after one of his big walks. The kibble is mixed in with his raw chicken, raw beef, steamed veggies and salmon oil. He took to the kibble right away, so we recommend it. Too bad about the high price.

  42. (verified owner)

My dogs loved this brand for years, however they wouldn’t touch this particular bag of food. After wrestling with them and trying to get them to eat it for days now I finally gave up and have tossed it.Have now read other reviews of online orders, wish I’d read them first… What is going on here? Buyer beware?

  43. (verified owner)

My female husky dog hates it. She got angry with me because I changed her food diet. She doesn’t like her new food, she doesn’t like the smell. As soon as I opened the bag, she would walk away from her bowl without even looking at it. I make her try one piece and she literally not eating it. I don’t think this food dog contains the ingredient as what it labeled. My dog is not a picky eater, she almost eat everything except this bag. The food is not expire, I just don’t know why…I request for a return, but amazon gave me a full refund without me returning it which is great. Thank you amazon for saving my day…

He just had his 3 y/o physical, and is in great shape, sleek and muscular, and all chemical values are healthy! One caveat though, is that our vet indicates that recent research shows that grain free dog food eventually leads to cardiac issues (cardiomegaly/enlarged heart) and suggested adding Nutro Dog Food to his meals. Finn needs to lose 5 pounds, so hopefully this addition will help. We alternate a bowl of BM Duck Dog Kibble with a bowl of adult Nutro Dog Food. Finn enjoys both foods!

The box was delivered to my residence with ants crawling all over the out side. When I open the box the bag had been cut at the top. It appears the it may have been cut with a box cutter. The cut was approximately 2-3 inches and ants were crawling in and out of the bag.. With in a few minutes I had ants all over my arms and neck. There was dog food spread through the inside of the box as well. Needless t say I had to through out the dog food. I would like a refund or another bag.

I have purchase Blue Buffalo for years butMy vet just informed me that “grain free” is proving to be very unhealthy for dogs. Research shows increase in heart disease. Too much fat in this, and other grain free foods. Ask your vet.

We’ve tried many different Blue Buffalo flavors and this is my least favorite because of the smell. My dog loves it just as much as he loves the chicken and beef flavors so if it were up to him he’d give this five stars but the smell is repugnant to me. I suppose that if you like the smell of duck you wouldn’t mind this as much, but I have to hold my breath when I open the airtight container where we store his food. I also feel that his stool has taken on the smell of the food too. Won’t buy again but still giving this 4/5 stars because I realize it’s just a personal preference.

I have had my dogs on this wilderness Blue Buffalo line of food since puppies. Been 6 years and 4 dogs now. They’ve gone from the puppy version, to the regular version, to the weight management version, back to the normal. All of the flavors. Never had any issues. They love it and it’s clean food. Every stomach issue they’ve had has been attributed to an outside factor. Dogs get into stuff. Dogs can get animal flues and colds just like humans when they’re running around getting into stuff. I mix some fresh cooked rice into their food (1-1 ratio) and it clears it right up every time within a day.

I’ve been feeding my dog Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon Grain Free formula for years, but beginning in May 2019, he started having diarrhea a ton and vomiting on and off. It correlated to the new bag of food that month. I thought he maybe just had a stomach bug, and we took him to the vet. All of his bloodwork and stool samples came back normal. When I switch him to rice and boiled chicken, he’s fine, but when I start adding the Blue Buffalo food back in, he gets sick again. This has been going on for two months now, and I’m starting to think it has to be the food. And now with the concern about grain-free diets, I’ll be switching brands.

After much research, I bought a bag. I can’t comment on the favor but it has a strong barbecue smell. She seemed to be getting indigestion as a lot of grass was being consumed after eating. My dog won’t eat this food without something added: carrots, chicken, or another dog food (Purina Bella mixed half and half. This is a small kibble like the Bells). She’s a lab and tries everything but clearly lets me know when she is not crazy about a product.
