We adopted a dog and the paper from the previous owner said Hill’s Science Diet Lamb and Rice was the only food he could eat.Our other dogs had always done well with grain free foods and did a lot of paw licking if the food contained grains. So we fed the “new” dog what we had fed the others, a high end lamb and rice, grain and corn free diet. The dog broke out in hives and we had more than a few trips to the vet to get the condition under control as it was so severe. Switched him to the Science Diet, and no allergies, coat and skin look well again. We even use the kibble for treats, and he’s fine with that because he seems to love the food.

I have bought “expensive, high quality food” (because it seems like if it’s expensive, it is immediately coined as “high-quality”), brands such as Blue Buffalo, and so many others that cause my schnauzer to break out in ugly rashes. This is the ONLY brand that does not give her that terrible itch at night and lets big poppa and momma sleep blissfully, along with herself. I mix half a disposable cup with fresh veggies that we eat and it has worked out fine. She’s even lost weight. 🙂

My dogs for the past 45 years have been fed Hill’s Science Diet and have done stellar on it. Each dog has had different needs as does my present dog. He has advanced to the Adult variety and absolutely loves it, and he looks magnificent having been fed Science Diet for all of his 7 years. He looks like he is 1 instead of 7, and has the energy of a puppy and the focus he needs to work as a Service Dog which he does to perfection. I get complements on his appearance and manners all of the time and I tribute most of that to his food, and his great attitude. Thank you Hill’s for keeping my animals in top shape over the many years.

Our dogs love the small size of the bits and the flavor of this food. The food has always been fresh in every bag we buy, and we have been using this for our dogs for the past 15 years, and we have 3 dogs. The price seems high, but we are willing to pay this because we consistently get good quality.

My dog has been on this food for the last year or so. He had some digestive issues with the dog food he was on before so after a little research and seeing what was available at one of the local pet stores my wife and I selected this stuff. It eliminated my dog’s digestion issues and he really seems to like this food. Based on my research this is not the absolute “best” dog food available, but I’m sticking with it because I think it’s pretty good, my dog likes it, and the price is reasonable.I also get a much better price using subscribe and save than picking it up locally, and I don’t have to walk any further than my front door to pick it up. Amazon is great for supporting my laziness and saving me money at the same time.

My dog, and by extension I, love this stuff. My Jack Russell has a very sensitive stomach and can’t eat plain boiled chicken+rice without experiencing vomit or diarrhea. However, this stuff never makes him sick or gives him loose stool. He likes it so much that while generally not food motivated when I pick up his bowl he knows what’s coming and gets very excited.

Cheaper than Petco and Petsmart by $6-$8. My German Shepherd is really fickle but likes the smaller kibbles. We have been trying to get her to eat more for 2 years with little success. We serve this to her twice a day (2 cups) with a little bit of science diet wet food on top and she’s eating much better overall. Good buy

Many Veterinarians in our area recommend this dog food, because it much healthier. For a while now I was buying it from Tractor Supply Store, which usually meant making a special trip there, hauling it to my car and then carrying it home. Amazon made this much easier for two reasons: (1) It’s now delivered to my house and (2) It’s automatically sent each month…same time each month. And bottom line, it’s cheaper through Amazon. So it’s a win, win, win (three wins) situation.

We buy this food for our chihuahuas but it works for our large sized dog also. This brand of dog food was recommended to us by our vet when our large dog started having problems with throwing up food. We are very, very happy with the results! All of our dogs eat it well and none of them have stomach problems! This keeps our dogs very healthy and we will continue to be consistent customers.

I have been feeding my fur babies the large breed puppy formula and when I switched them to this they went nuts! They eat it so much better and seem to do better on it as well. I have it on subscribe and save and wouldn’t have it any other way. It comes to my front door without me even having to remember to order it and plus I save money!!

Been using this for nearly 10 years. No Wheat. My Dog loves it. Got tied of the frustration at Petco/Petsmart and found it ON MY DOORSTEPfor a lower price !! Be Calm. And, shop PRIME !!!

I have a little (25 lb) standard size dachshund. I can’t tell that he is picky about food or will not eat some brands et all, but when it is time to have Hills’ products, he will never resists. Even more, he loves it. In addition to that, Hills provide food for all ages, sizes and diets. Little advice: if for some reason you little fury friend has an allergy, I would try to change main source of protein, for instance try salmon or chicken products instead of so popular chicken.

  14. (verified owner)

Great dog food! We will buy this again! Our miniature schnauzer is a very picky eater, and she eats this!

  15. (verified owner)

High quality at a great price, you know when your Vet says what are you feeding your pet and you say Science Diet and they smile you are feeding your best friend well.

  16. (verified owner)

Great product that won’t upset stomach of dogs

  17. (verified owner)

Very gentle formula for my French Bulldogs. Cuts way down on the gas produced by them.

My mother’s small dog was having difficulty with larger kibbles. We have a total of six dogs and most are larger than tiny Maltese mix Chloe. Since starting this feed about 6 weeks ago, Chloe loves her mealtime and is able to eat much easier. It must be yummy, because she rarely fails to empty her bowl. Her weight is perfect and nicely maintained. Really great price too on subscribe and save.

3 year old GSP became a little calmer when switched from Hills Science Advanced Fitness Lamb to this food. No adverse diet adjustments, my dog transitioned well, and still has plenty of energy on daily 6 mile hikes.

  20. (verified owner)

My dog loves this dog food. He is a Shar-pie mix and has issues with skin and digestive. No issues with this flavor or Lamb.

For some reason, the science of nutrition has become more like religion in modern times….as if what the owner believes will magically make the dog healthy. Dogs and their bodies cannot share our belief systems.I’ve been using Science Diet brand for over 30 years now, various formulas for individual pets with their needs. They do very well. Great, in fact. There is the correct amount of protein: they can digest and metabolize it all and not have excess go through them or harm the renal system and cause stones. The calcium is correctly combined with other things so it is available to the dog.The volume I need to feed for each meal is small enough that it does not risk bloat, cause gas, or interfere with digestion. In other words, it fits comfortably in my dog’s stomach when it expands with the moisture in there. The bag lasts a LONG time because meal sizes are small due to nutritional density. It does not have “flavors” dogs cannot taste (they don’t have taste buds like we do) or artificially added colors and shapes dogs do not care about.I measure the meals with an actual measuring cup, so I know if my dog is losing his appetite right away.I use small bites for my larger dog because it slows down his eating, taking him longer to finish, which is healthier and allows him to enjoy it more.I like to feed poultry-based foods as they are easiest to digest, but lamb and turkey are high in tryptophan, which can be soothing and support good mental health. When it comes to ingredients, I trust what veterinarians and canine nutritional experts approve, not what the average consumer thinks sounds good, or what dogs would pick in a lineup (Cheetos or brownies would probably win, really, with dogs). Grapes and raisins are healthy for us, but can kill dogs. They are not just like us. This product is one I trust because it is made for domestic dogs. Yes, “biproducts” sound gross, and maybe they are, but bear in mind humans fed dogs offal and leftovers, not the best cuts, historically. Dogs got what they got, and ate what we ate, and we were pretty poor. We taught them to help us hunt, but also not to kill and eat the things, but to bring them to us or hold them in one place, even rats (because we wanted them to kill all the rats, not just what they could eat). These guys will eat poop and raw dead birds maggots and all in the yard if they can. Cooked and properly processed biproducts are not that gross.CON: Science Diet on their smaller bags of product, like for cats, is using Velcro to allow bags to be re-sealable. It works very well, keeping the food fresher. While I currently decant the dog food into another container, I think it would be great if they added this to all sizes of bags. If you buy this, rolling it tightly and clipping, putting in large Ziplocs, or getting a container to keep it fresh (and not stale) will be the best methods.NOTE: If your dog has a confirmed allergy to a specific grain, like corn, the usual culprit, as that is New World and was not around most of the time mankind was creating dogs, then this may not be for you. Even formulas that have barley or rice sometimes have corn products, so read labels carefully or use dogfoodadvisor dot com. Limited ingredient foods can be the best thing. However, make sure the allergy is not to peas, a common culprit, used in many grain-free foods, before you go crazy. Let your vet help you

I don’t usually buy the lamb and rice kibble because it’s a little pricey. However, my dog was low on food, and she’d been a really good girl that day, so I decided to indulge her.Usually I buy the larger sized kibble, but despite my searching, I couldnt find it. So, between the size of the kibble and the new flavor, it was with a bit of trepidation that I filled her bowl.Clearly the flavor was not a problem. She came right over and stuck her nose into the food. But it was a bit difficult at first fir her to eat the smaller kibble. However, dogs being dogs (I shudder when I think of what I’ve seen dogs eat over the years), she got over that issue right away.I’ve been feeding my dogs Science Diet kibble for over 30 years, when my vet suggested it for our rescue dog. And there are so many obvious advantages to feeding a dog kibble that, even if it wasn’t better for them, would still influence me to buy it.Really, in general dogs become a part of our families. I wouldn’t give my children canned food to eat at every meal, because I want them to be healthy and have a long life. I’m not a person who feels that my dogs are my children, but they are still very important members of my family. So I want to make sure that they get the best nutrition available.

I have a 10 lb pomeranian whose vet recommended science diet since she was 2 weeks old. It’s awesome to get a subscription instead of remembering to buy them. I got the wrong kind (not their fault at all) and now my pomeraninan will have to endure trying to bite these big pieces for a few months 😔

  24. (verified owner)

This helped my dog loose weight. Thank you. I want her to be healthier, lesser joint issues or possible diabetes.

  25. (verified owner)

What you’d expect from science diet. Forgot there’s a difference between their small bites and toy breed. These were a bit too big for my mini Yorkie.

  26. (verified owner)

Very pleased and will buy again if needed. Thank you!

  27. (verified owner)

My dogs really like this flavor.

  28. (verified owner)

My dog eats science diet good.

  29. (verified owner)

We recently switch over to this product after our Vet recommended it. Our dogs were having a difficult time with other dog food. (constantly vomiting)Now, they are free from that and love the food too!How convenient to get this delivered to your door without having to lift the heavy bag in the store and then again into your car and another time when you get home…Love online shopping!

I have a 16 year old chihuahua and this is the only brand of kibble that she has ever been able to digest well. It is all I buy.

  31. (verified owner)

We have 2 dogs with food allergies and this is their recommended diet. It has stopped the binging, gorging and dry heaves the dogs were experiencing. Plus it is nice to have the heavy bag delivered to the doorstep.

My dog loves this food! It gives her more energy and makes her coat look healthy.

  33. (verified owner)

Well, it’s Science Diet so you know that they make a quality product. This is the type of food they gave my dog in the pound and I am just going to continue on with it. Honestly, the dog is not crazy about dry dog food but I will not give her wet food on demand. She gets that in the evening and usually chows down pretty good when I mix this with some wet food. She’s gained about a pound since I’ve gotten her so she seems to be enjoying this. I would heartily recommend Science Diet products.

My dogs love this food. I don’t like the smell though. But they love it so that’s all that matters.

  35. (verified owner)

My dog, Tuck Finn, thinks it’s great!

  36. (verified owner)

Only dog food I buy. My dog is 8 years old but still loves the mini morsels. Love this brand!

  37. (verified owner)

I have been buying Science Diet for all my dogs for over 20 years. Apparently they changed the recipe recently. This stuff smells horrific!!! I still tried to feed it to my dog (who’s eaten Science Diet every day for the past 2 years) and he wouldn’t touch it. He did not eat one drop of food all day Saturday so I had to go out on Easter to get him a replacement brand of food. I am incredibly disappointed in Science Diet for doing this!!!!!

  38. (verified owner)

    Great quality

My dog has been eating this food for over 5 years and loved it, until the new formula. He won’t eat it. He would put it in his mouth and spit it back on the ground. Switched to Blue wilderness red meat. Back to eating normally again. Very disappointed in the company.

I buy this dog food at the recommendation of our vet; it’s cheaper here on A than at the clinic or any retail in town. My dog always approaches her food cautiously, then eats it all in about 2 minutes! She’s 6 and has always been very healthy, consolidated but not “hard” stool, and energetic for walks and playtime. Pet food has become controversial, but this works great for my mixed-breed, 55-lb dog.

All I can say is that Captain Nemo loves his Scuence Diet and his annual physical shows him to be healthy and in perfect weight. This was a fantastic value and I am saving tons getting it here instead of at the corner store.

  44. (verified owner)

My dog is allergic to chicken products.. this is the only food he can eat! Great price!

  45. (verified owner)

Science Diet food killed multiple dogs and they showed no remorse. This is the last bag I will ever buy.

  46. (verified owner)

This food makes a huge change in our dog’s health and coat. When we stray..we pay! We have leaned product loyalty here.

  47. (verified owner)

good food at a good price

EDIT: Looks like we have a winner and it’s not Science Diet! I have almost completely transitioned my dog to Diamond Naturals SMALL BREED Lamb and Rice (he’s 33 pounds, but likes small kibble) and he’s doing well on it and LIKED from the first moment I gave him a few kibbles to try!____________________________________________________OK, I got this because my dog has been on a grain free diet for over 7 years and I was concerned with the recent news about grain free diets and the OTHER ingredients they have (seems there no definitive ANYTHING yet).SO hedging my bets, I decided to try a mix of Science Diet lamb meal and brown rice mixed with his Taste of the Wild Lamb.Let’s start with cons:INGREDIENTS: I don’t think the ingredients are the best and I was been checking everything I can online. It’s not that I think Science Diet is BAD, I just don’t think it’s necessarily the best. And that brings us to COST: I think part of the cost is the hype it’s Science Diet and has been around a long time and it’s usually sold in vets offices. I think it’s pretty high-price in comparison with better quality ingredients dog food.TASTE: OK, I have to go with my dog’s opinion here. He generally embraces a change and it’s lamb, his fav. He told one bit of kibble and promptly spit it out. I added quite a bit of water (he’s used to dry kibble though I usually add maybe a tsp to moisten) and he eventually ate it, but it isn’t making a great impression.RECALLS: Science Diet has had multiple recalls in the past which is another thing that gives me pause.I REALLY got this as I was concerned with the whole grain-free thing and wanted to get a small bag to try so I can combine his grain-free with a lamb and rice.PROS:Well, it’s lamb and rice and a well known brand.BUT it’s back to the drawing board. Corn and wheat are ingredients that he doesn’t do that well on, that’s why I changed him to lamb and grain free in the first place.

I have used Hills Science diet with both of my dogs for 7+ years and have never had an issue until June 2019. I purchased the small bites lamb and rice; which is now in a new bag and it made my dog very Ill – vomiting and diarrhea. My dog has never experienced this in the past and has eaten the lamb in rice for approximately 2yrs with good results. I’ve read on Hills website that some of the varieties of dog food have an “updated formula” along with a new bag design. I’m assuming the Lamb and Rice small bites are one of those that have been updated. The dog food had a noticeable odor upon opening it. I’ve never smelled this odor in all my years feeding science diet to my dogs. After this experience I’ve lost faith in science diet and will be switching brands. I care too much about my dogs to risk their health.
