My dog loves it. I like the ingredients…she loves the taste.I do NOT understand why it is so expensive…but it is no worse than some others.UPDATE: My dog is miserable after eating this for a couple of months. She is EXTREMLY gassy & has diarrhea. We’re working to get her evened out. She initially loved this food, but now wont eat it when we put it in the bowl.

  2. (verified owner)

Finally, I found a moderately priced dog food with an acceptable ingredients list that (drumroll) BOTH my dogs will eat. My big boys are big eaters but, for whatever reason, they’re very finicky. They chow down on this stuff and they thrive on it so we’re sticking with it. I do wish it had a lower grain content.

I am a vet tech and always fed science diet. A few years ago I met a friend that had three Labradors, age 14, 15, and 17. All had been eating this food for years. I decided to give it a try and my dogs loved it and the severe gas they had been experiencing on other foods was gone. I love that if I need a last minute refill I can just grab a small bag at the grocery store to hold us over.

  4. (verified owner)

The only problem with this one is that it has the old packaging which is prone to carrying moths. I have now had two house infestations of pantry moths with this paper packaging. I learned now as soon as I get it to put it in the refrigerator but that still doesn’t help the feeling you get when you see the dead moth at the bottom of your dog’s dish. My dogs love this food and flavor so I keep ordering it. I will be posting an additional review for the one with the correct packaging.

Both of my dogs developed a serious skin irritation within a couple weeks of starting this food. Constant itching and red rash. Stopped the food and skin cleared up in a few days.

We got a lab mix “pound puppy.” It turned out that she has a “sensitive stomach” a/k/a stinky gas! We were told by the vet to buy a better dog food, and we tried many of the higher priced ones that were 100% grain free, organic, etc. We found that she simply preferred Purina One. We tried all the varieties before finally settling on the Turkey and Venison. The others varieties still gave her gas, but since she has been eating the Turkey and Venison Purina One, she has been essentially gas-free. The kibble is small and thin enough that our old dachshund with bad teeth can eat it too. Highly recommend you give it a try!

We used to get the generic dog food from Target until our dog (border collie/lab mix) started experiencing bloody stools, vomiting, and massive amounts of diarrhea. Our vet diagnosed him with pancreatitis, which he said is common with cheap dog food. He recommended a dog food without dye, which this doesn’t have. Our dog ate like a bird before we got this brand; now, he loves eating his food. His coat looks healthier, he has more energy, and we haven’t had any problems with diarrhea or vomiting since switching him to this.

I used to feed my dog really fancy dog food from an actual pet supply store- expensive, grain-free, etc. Then she got a taste of this from her doggy friend’s bowl, and stopped eating her regular fancy food. Now she is a Purina One dog. Works for me- this is much cheaper! She is prone to allergies and skin issues, but has had no problems with this food.

We were looking for a decent dog food that wouldn’t break the bank for our pure bread Akita and our husky mix. The Akita will eat anything and lots of it but the husky mix is very finicky. This is the first food that the husky mix will actually eat w/o any coaxing. This food has a rich, meaty smell and both our dogs love it.

  10. (verified owner)

Our dog loves this variety of purina one. But there is something wrong with this bag, as she won’t touch it. I’ll buy from the store in the future. The shipping was really quick though.

I see a lot of 1 stars due to making their dogs sick. First of all everyone should be aware of switching your dogs food. You can’t just buy a new dog food and expect great results. You should NEVER give you’re dog new food without doing it slowly!! If you don’t do it slowly your dog will get sick! You need to mix it with the food your pet is already on and mix new food in slowly. You should do this for at least 2 wks before just switching over! My hound loves this food has never mad him sick. For those who say there were worms or it was stale, look at how you store your food. It should be in a sealed closed container! All food has been recalled one way or another, nothing will ever perfect!

I have a very picky Boxer/Pitt mix who will essentially starve herself if she doesn’t like the food. You can hear her stomach from across the room. I’ve tried Iams, and The dog for dog, which donates a bag to a local shelter. Expensive stuff..cheap stuff wet stuff, even cooked her food. Then I saw this and tried it. She absolutely loves it. Her poops are more well formed😁, there’s no stinky farts, Pitt owners will know what I’m saying, boxers too, and she will do tricks for the pieces of venison and turkey. My cat likes the soft pieces roo.

  13. (verified owner)

My dogs eat it. But…they would eat a light bulb if it was wrapped in lunch meat so that doesn’t say much. My main reason for buying this food is because I can usually buy it for a dollar a pound and a it’s a relatively decent dog food..if you know what I mean..it’s not Ol’ Roy.Amazon likes to jack the price up real high sometimes and then I just go look for another dog food and I will come back to this one when the price gets low again. I’ve learned to buy a couple of bags when the price is good.

  14. (verified owner)

I bought this dog food and have purchased this exact brand and type off of amazon for months and after my last order I fed it to my dog and she was throwing up and had diarrhea for 5 days until I took her to the vet and had to throw away this practically full 30+lbs of dog food and replace it. I would really like a refund. I am super upset my dog was so sick from this bad bag of dog food.

  15. (verified owner)

Just opened the dog food, poured it into her current dog food and worms fell out and started crawling EVERYWHERE. Not that I could have missed it, but if I would have given her any of this worm-infested food, I would have been livid, and she likely would have gotten extremely ill.

  16. (verified owner)

We found mold (or something not good) in this bag of dog food & it made our dog very sick. Never had a problem until now.

  17. (verified owner)

Amazed at how quickly this arrived to my home. I signed up for Amazon pet and this is an excellent convenient way to have heavy bags of dog food sent to the house. Not to mention a game changer when carrying heavy bags of dog food with my kids. Having dog food shipped to the house via amazon pet is a new way of life in my house.

  18. (verified owner)

Both our dogs were vomiting for a whole day within 48 hours of trying this dog food. We took them to the vet, X-rays we’re negative and she suggested it was the food.

I have four dogs, a Labradoodle and 3 Shepherddoodles: their coats look amazing and their skin outstanding, even in this cold dry Winter air. I had been using Call of the Wild (Wild Salmon) grain-free blend and was quite satisfied with its results. Reading about Purina ONE SmartBlend True Instinct and reviewing its listed ingredients, I thought I would see if there was any improvement over my dog’s current food. I have now been feeding my dogs Purina ONE SmartBlend for 2 1/2 months and am amazed at the improvements in my dog’s coats and skin! My dogs look incredible! They are in show-quality condition and love their new food immensely. I could not be more satisfied with the results! Highly recommended.

  20. (verified owner)

I thought this would be a better choice for my dog, but in the long run wasn’t. I like Purina brand and thought this would be a better choice over the Lamb and Rice for the ingredients. She wasn’t able to tolerate it and she got really bad diarrhea from it. Going to try the Beyond Lamb and Rice and if that doesn’t work out, I’ll go back to the Purina One Lamb and Rice that my Vet recommended and what she was eating before I tried this product.

  21. (verified owner)

Mold!! Fed dogs from it for about 4 days. Wondered why they didn’t like it as much as usual and noticed this! Upon further inspection saw that is was all though out the entire batch. Terrible!!

  22. (verified owner)

This metal piece was in my dogs food. Luckily he spit it out, otherwise there could have been serious internal damage, as there is a sharp edge to it.

  23. (verified owner)

For some reason, this food is just not ideal for my dogs digestive system. Both our 40lb aerdale mix and 20lb silky terrier mix have had loose stool and bad breath since switching to this brand. Previously using Rachael Ray’s Just 6 and will be going back. They seem to like the taste and texture but dealing with the bad smelling gas, breath, and needing to give the little dog extra baths is absolutely no fun.

  24. (verified owner)

Update 4/5/18: Got another bag of this food weeks later, also full of bugs! Never again Purina.I have been using this food for some time now and the dogs really like it. This last bag was full of white stuff, as others have commented. IT’S LARVA! It’s full of bugs. Let them grow for a week and they hatched into small beetles. SO GROSS! Purina has to recall all this recent batch of food to fix this NOW!

  25. (verified owner)

Awful… one of my dogs threw up 2 different times after eating this and my other dog won’t touch it. I normally give them Purina One lamb and rice, which I think I’ll go back to.Had to return.

  26. (verified owner)

I’ve previously ordered without issue, this last bag purchased in March 2018 had maggots and bugs throughout the bag. Do yourself and your dog a favor and get something else.

  27. (verified owner)

I pay the same on Amazon that I would pay in Petco or anywhere else for this dog food. But it is worth every penny because lugging around 40 pounds of dog food is not an easy task. I love that I could just go on and order with ease and in 2 days it will be at my front door. It doesn’t get any more convenient than that. I have tried a lot of the Purina foods and this particular brand is loaded with chunks of meat. They love it.

  28. (verified owner)

I only bought this because it’s what my dog was eating at the shelter. I’m immediately starting his transition onto Fromm. This food is made with very low quality ingredients, please choose a better food for your dog like Nutro, Fromm, Taste of the Wild, or even Simply Nourish or Kirkland signature. Amazon’s new brand of dog food Wag is also good.

  29. (verified owner)

Absolutely unacceptable. I usually pour the kibble into my dog’s bowls straight from the bag, but i recently purchased a white (clean) dog food container to better preserve kibble. Thank GOD I did!! When I poured the kibble, like some of the other pictures showed, there was a weird string/mold growing at the bottom kibble and all the kibble broke apart into basically some weird stringy thing. It essentially broke apart and looked like it was made with white hair, if that can provide a better visual. Only the hair was thicker, like when you bunch up an old cobweb? … so disgusting. AND it had little black bugs in it. That kept crawling into the bottom of the container.I mailed it to my parents house because my dog ran out of food and I wanted to try something different for her so I cannot take pictures myself of the disgusting product That was just delivered. I can’t imagine how sick my dog would’ve gotten to eat weirdly moldy dog food. Poor thing. My mom sent me a video of one of the bugs she captured on the lid of the container it that I have attached to my review.

We’ve got 1 picky eater that has lost interest in the Purina One Chicken and Rice that we’ve fed him for over a year. We tried this to get his interest back and it seems to have helped. It looks just like the Lamb we tried a while ago. Hopefully he’ll start eating like normal again soon. The ingredients are impressive compared to many others. I always thought the True instinct was much more expensive than the regular Purina One but it’s almost the same price.

Our 4 dogs LOVE this dog food. We were buying some other high end foods, Purina Beyond with salmon, and they won’t eat it without chicken broth being poured over the food. We have gone through other brands also with the same effect. But this one, they start to eat as soon as it is poured in the bowl. None of the dogs has thrown up or gotten sick from it. Purina One carries a good name and the food is from the US. This one is also ok with our vet. We try to do our homework on ingredients and sourcing and company history/reputation. This one is a winner for our 4 dogs, big and little.

I used this for years and never had a problem. I was on auto ship and for 2 bags in a row with bugs. One did got sick from eating the bugs, I will never use this product again.

I received a 15 lb bag yesterday and fed 1 cup to my dog. 3 hours later she was extremely sick and vomited. She has had this before and not gotten sick. The bag was defective or they have changed the formula. The rest of the bag is going in the garbage, today she will sniff it and walk away.

  34. (verified owner)

My dog likes this very much. Not sure why when I purchased the food in July 2018 price was 12.39; today August 19, 2018, price is 22.98. Please explain.

  35. (verified owner)

This is my third time buying this product. You save money buying a large bag but beware. Opened up the bag and found a moth. Looked closely at the food and you could see the moth eggs and worms. I ended up throwing the entire bag in the trash. Did some research. Seems to be a common problem with Purina products. Don’t buy!

  36. (verified owner)

My 2 German Shepherds and my little pittie mix love this food and it is $7- a bag cheaper at Amazon than it is at Walmart. They all are quite lively (help!) and have glossy coats. I have tried a number of different foods over the years, but for a moderately price brand, it seems good.

  37. (verified owner)

There were apparently some sort of bug larvae inside this bag of food. I had it stored inside, unopened for several weeks until my dogs finished another bag. I opened this bag and filled a plastic storage container with a seal that is kept by the feeding station inside my home. At the same time, I filled a second, much smaller plastic container with a sealed lid that I took to our lake camp. About 2 weeks later, I opened the home bin and there were bugs flying around inside of the bin. That was 3 days ago. We just arrived at our camp…this container has the same type of flying bugs. Its past the return date so I spent a chunk of change on BAD dog food that I now have to throw out. I’ve had dogs my entire life- never seen anything like this.My dogs have had this food before from a different source- I wondered why they weren’t really eating much of this…..

My dog is 2 years old and named Duchess. She is treated like royalty…pampered and spoiled. She is very active and very athletic and never walks if she can run. She loves Purina One and eats it everyday. Obviously it has the taste she likes, it is easy to serve, gives her a great coat and tons of energy without adding fat. If the Duchess eats it it is fit for King, Queeny and all other royal dogs.

When people see my just turned 4, 152 lb Great Pyrenees male, after asking what kind of dog, weight, height, etc. There almost always is a comment about the quantity of food he must eat and are shocked or think I’m lying when I reply, not really or not that much. Those of you who know or have one know that they are not usually heavy eaters. My spoiled brat will go through this bag in about a month. However, Don’t feed him this brand and he’ll turn up his nose at it and those of you who have one or have had, know having a battle of Will’s with a Great Pyrenees is a losing proposition, he’ll hold out until he’s liable to damage himself. I could never be as loyal to him as he is to me and my family, so he gets the food he wants.

my ridgeback loves this food. We went from the puppy large breed chicken flavor… mixed them half and half for a bit and switched her over to this adult food. She loves both of them. I might even continue to mix the two..

Boxes this large are too cumbersome for delivery a d a waste of space in delivery vehicles.

  42. (verified owner)

Our pup was rubbing her nose on the ground a lot, getting eye boogies, and sneezing. She also would eat a few kibbles and walk away. Vet recommended Purina and we thought a sensitive type would help. We switched the food to this type as well as her treats. She now eats a bowl at a time. It has helped tremendously with her sneezing and rubbing her nose on the ground. She still gets eye boogies but the vet believes it is a different kind of allergy. She loves the taste and is maintaining weight. These treats were a great switch as well and she loves the taste. She goes crazy for them

  43. (verified owner)

Had to move my now senior pup to a soft food diet, and it has been near impossible to find him treats he will eat, that are soft. I bought these at a local store on a whim, and to my surprise he loves them! So, of course I had to hunt down a larger size bag. They would also be great for puppies as a training treat- easy to break up in smaller pieces and a bit smelly.

  44. (verified owner)

Like the fact that my rescue dog who will hardly eat any of the dry foods I bought in the past such as Merrick, Wellness, beyond, he eats up this smartblend and doesn’t get tired of it and turn up his nose and stop like all the others. Its wonderful that I’ve finally found the best one for him. I can even add his medication for allergies and asthma and he’ll eat them as he doesn’t notice because he now likes his food. Very happy forever home momma. 😊👍❤

  45. (verified owner)

My dogs love this formula. They get excited to eat it. They especially like the morsels that looks like meat pieces. I buy regularly until one of my dogs with allergies starts reacting to it. His coat starts changing not as shiny and he starts biting and scratching. I think there may be more unknowns in this dog food. I then switch to a non grain salmon recipe.

  46. (verified owner)

Being on the petite side, hauling a large bag of dog food like this one isn’t easy. Not to mention, I’m guilty of forgetting to go by the store to purchase it. I LOVE Amazon’s option to schedule a delivery for it monthly so it is one less thing I have to think about doing. My dogs love the flavor and I love that I am able to feed them quality food without all of the processed garbage and not break my budget.

  47. (verified owner)

My husky has had allergies since he was a puppy — traditionally we had to put him on a BARF diet vet recommended which consisted of me spending 100’s of dollars a month on pre-made patties or making a trip to the butcher daily.I finally tried him on maybe 30 foods before I found this one which seemed to be high in protein enough to not upset his stomach with all the fillers/grains. He acts just as good as he did on the store bought meat. I assume this has to be high quality to illicit such a good response from him.

  48. (verified owner)

my dog has allergies to yeast and additives,,this dog food seems to not have him itching at all for it to be a low grade and low cost food…i cook his wet food and buy his dry food and this food seems to be ok for him i will try it again when he has completed this bag maybe if there is a beef try it next time

I have 2 English Bulldog and one French Bulldog and I have tried every over priced food in the pet store. One of my bullies has allergies and eye issues so I wanted a food that would not make those issues worse. Tried grain free, limited ingredient, salmon, breed specific, you name it. I joined a bulldog lover group on Facebook and was reading comments left by owners when asked what they feed their bullies. Of course there are those who jump all over anyone who doesn’t feed some boutique food or raw diet but I was really surprised by how many feed their bullies Purina One Smart Blend so I thought since it is half the price and I get more product why not give it a try.FIRST – my dogs love it. With the most recent food prior to this one I was throwing away half their food but now feeding this combined with the some of the Purina One moist food they lick their bowls clean. Note I also feed moist food when feeding the more expensive foods. Still wouldn’t finish it all.SECOND-My bulldog with the eye issues is actually looking better. Less squinting and less watery tears (he has had entropian surgery but allergies cause his eye lids to still roll inward and the surgeon said there is nothing we can do beside steroids to reduce the swelling). I think the grain free was actually doing him more harm than good. So in this way this food has been a real blessing.THIRD- Poop is solid and not runny, some of the previous foods caused terrible runny stoolsOverall I could not be happier with this food. I will say it is not as pretty as the more expensive foods. By that I mean the pieces of food are not all uniform and perfectly shaped. I don’t care and neither do my dogs. Frankly I kick myself every time I think about how many years I spent feeding my dogs over priced food when such a good alternative was right in front of me.

I have a very picky Golden Doodle who doesn’t like much and won’t stick with anything for long. I switched him over to Purina One Grain Free awhile back and he loved it (judged by how fast he dug in and finished). So I started looking for other flavors to add to the mix in an effort to keep him from getting bored. That’s what I like about the Purina One grain free line — they have quite a few flavor options I can switch between without having to spend a lot of time reanalyzing ingredients with each switch. All of which led me to this promotional bag of True Instinct – Like the others my doodle immediately took to it. Success! Happy to have a few more quality options available cause constantly worrying about dog food is not high on my list.
