Please get this before you bring home your puppy. Even if you have had puppies before, it is a necessary refresher to remember to teach and train from a perspective the puppy will understand.

Patricia McConnell is amazing, and the book offers great “positive” means for training your Puppy. I highly recommend it for anyone thinking about getting a new puppy, though it would also be useful for someone adopting an older dog.

Nice and very informative. I will be passing this on to someone else when finished. This would also make a nice gift.

The author is a very well respected expert on animal behavior

  7. (verified owner)

Concise and to the point, with lots of practical advices and step by step directions. We still haven’t tried any of it in practice though.

Really good book that has helped us tremendously in raising our Goldendoodle puppy.

  9. (verified owner)

Really good and accessible introduction to the pups first 12 months, and basic developmentally appropriate training for each stage. I recommend this book to all new puppy owners!. (also good as a refresher for people who have had puppies in the past)

  10. (verified owner)

Very good book for first time puppy owners or experienced. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a puppy and this book was a great refresher. I would highly recommend getting this book before you bring the puppy home but refer to it each week as you progress.

I will likely buy the book because I respect the author’s work, but the 1 star is because the Kindle edition “free sample” was a joke. It included the title page, dedication, and table of contents. How can one decide if they want to buy the book based on this amount of information? Most samples of pther books I have downloaded at least included a small amount of text.

One of the best things I ever did before I got my weimaraner pup. Helped immensely. A breeze to read too. Highly recommend.

  13. (verified owner)

Full of good information. Much of it is common sense and some training methods that are tried and true. It’s hard to follow ALL of the tips for training and not feel as if you are doing nothing else but puppy training and sleeping. However I did find the book helpful and I return to it often for a refresher.

Great – straight-forward book for puppy owners. Also a great reference book over and over again.

it was too basic for me, but, it would be great for first timers. i was disappointed that I leaned nothing new; but, i had to have it due to the puppy on the front of the cover. He looks just like my beloved Tucker that I had for 14 years. RIP my love I miss you

Very, good and helpful info in this book for first ever older fur baby parents!

Pat McConnell is a every experienced, compassionate and knowledgable behaviorist. She gives instructions for raising a puppy with kindness and great humor My only criticism is that it would be helpful to have some sort of schedule as to what to age you should start working on each behavior. As a veterinarian I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about or who has recently adopted a new puppy.

  21. (verified owner)

Good starter book but a bit harder to follow at times. It’s because I am not a real trainer.

  22. (verified owner)

I’m a professional dog trainer and recommend this book above all others to my puppy students. It’s well written, easy to read, and thorough in terms of covering all things puppy. If you’re overwhelmed with the new bundle of joy in your life or want extra tips to get a great head start, this is the book for you.

There are millions of videos out there that will give you same information.Stick with one author or series and watch the free videos and save money here

EXCELLENT Book. Have already given it to three friends who are getting new puppies for their home. It’s a Puppy Primer for humans to learn to speak and watch puppy language. Highly Recommend!

Lots of good info, but this book controller refers to don’t things “this week” without saying what that means. Maybe the printed book had more information on time frame? Also there are lots of highlighted text that exactly matched the text as you read. Again, this probably looks normal in the print book but it’s weird and redundant in the Kindle version. Lots of good training advice, though. I’m sure I’ll refer back to this as I train my puppy.

    As expected

  27. (verified owner)

Trying a new puppy is never easy but the clear explanations and weekly plans make the training fun for dog and trainer

  28. (verified owner)

Easy read. Very helpful with up to date information. Def recommend.

  29. (verified owner)

Great information for first time puppy owners! I would suggest getting this book before you get the puppy!!

  30. (verified owner)

Great advice on training a puppy. Very well written and enjoyable to read.

  31. (verified owner)

My version is missing pages 2-3 & 6-7; not happy about it because the information is missing. This is the first time I’ve received a book with blank pages AND I have no idea how to get a proper copy.

  32. (verified owner)

Love love love. So many things I would not have even considered in this book. Can’t reccomend enough.

  33. (verified owner)

Great book with solid advice. I don’t like that the price has more than doubled in 6 months.

  34. (verified owner)

This excellent guide hits all the important points and questions. It’s well organized and offers concise advice and examples for training your puppy.

  35. (verified owner)

This book was recommended by a trainer. I have used lots of the points in the book for our two puppies.

  36. (verified owner)

The book is well written and easy to understand, with a lot of useful information. The layout on Kindle is a bit confusing however, with the section and chapter breaks not always clear. (I was reading on Kindle for iPad on an iPad mini, so that may have contributed to the layout issues–not sure). In any case, kind of wish I had gone for the actual book instead of the e-book but otherwise very happy with it.

  37. (verified owner)

    Highly recommend.

  38. (verified owner)

Well organized and written, and straightforward. Great primer.

This book is a must-read for new puppy owners. You can definitely trust the info in this book; Patricia McConnell is a certified applied animal behaviorist, ie she has a PhD in zoology and has studied behavioral science. Don’t let that put you off though; this book is an easy read, and doesn’t bog you down with science jargon. The information is spot on and the instructions are step by step and easy to follow. Yes, it is set up as a program starting when you first bring the puppy home, but the dog police aren’t going to come get you if you don’t do everything in order. Whether you’re about to get your puppy or you got them a month ago and you’re starting to run into trouble, this book is one of the best you can get.

Terrific to make basic training for you and puppy easy, effortless and enjoyable. I think it especially well suited to first-time puppy pupils. Having owned many dogs, I picked it up to refresh. It did the job, though sometimes a bit tediously.

  41. (verified owner)

I was crazy enough to get 2 puppies at the same time, never having owned puppies before… thank goodness for this book

  42. (verified owner)

My copy was missing pages 89 – 104. The content otherwise is very well written! Trying to ship items back to Amazon is not worth the effort to get a replacement of a 13 dollar book.

  43. (verified owner)

Good training book and what to expect

  44. (verified owner)

Clear and helpful in every way

  45. (verified owner)

Before i got my first puppy, i decided to buy some literature. I’m only half way though this book, but it has changed the way i treat dogs. The book has a great progression system – building on different methods (ex. Positive Reinforcement). The training methods actually make sense. When I read it, i constantly would tell myself how much the content makes sense. It won’t take many pages to realize you’ve been approaching dogs wrong your entire life. Great read, huge eye-opener.

This is a very good book that I picked up upon adopting a three-year-old dog released from a puppy mill. It is easy to read (though, of course, not easy to implement). Recommended for any readers faced with managing a new dog that has joined the family.

  47. (verified owner)

I love this book! My Morkie Asia has learned so much already and it makes training so simple !!

  48. (verified owner)

She addresses a wide & practical advise on on training a puppy. Would strongly recommend.

  49. (verified owner)

I needed a refresher on puppy training for the new puppy we’re getting. This book was great. It refreshed me on the techniques used on our first dog and the training techniques are solid.

I found this book to be relevant and it had good training methods to help us with our puppies. Would definitely recommend it for any new puppy parents and if you need a review.
